Ranges want Archie

Whittlesea Ranges have confirmed they are talking to Melbourne Victory star Archie Thompson about joining the club, but say a lot has to happen before it will occur.

Thompson has already announced he won’t be returning to the A-league club next season and is weighing up where his soccer future lies.

Ranges’ secretary Sergio Costanzo said while the club had approached Thompson to join the club, they were waiting for him to finish up with Melbourne Victory before getting into more serious talks.

“Nothing has been finalised and it’s not the time to be seriously talking with him playing tomorrow [in the AFC Champions League],” Costanzo said.

“The club is definitely interested in getting Archie to play here and we would love for him to play with us.

“He’s  got one or two offers from other A-league clubs to consider and we respect that he still had to play at least tomorrow with Victory.”

Costanzo said if they were to get Thompson to the club, it would benefit them as a whole not just the senior playing group.

“He has the potential to help with coaching and look at setting up a coaching school,” he said.

“Archie has done lots of clinics at the Ranges through our sponsors who we share and the kids always flock to see him.”

The Ranges sit second on the NPL 2 west table, one point behind North Geelong Warriors.
