Promotion fight ramps up

The promotion race in FFV state league 2 north-west looks set to go down to the final round.

With three rounds to go, two points separates the top five teams with only the top two teams to win promotion to state league 1 north-west.

Sporting Whittlesea missed a chance to jump to the top of the ladder after a 0-0 draw with Essendon United.

Moreland United, who entered round 19 on top of the ladder, lost to Yarraville 3-1.

The win sees Yarraville return to the top of the table on 40 points, one point clear of Moreland United, Sporting Whittlesea and Banyule City.

Essendon Royals are a further point back.

At the other end of the table, Hume United remains four points clear of the relegation zone.

They lost 3-1 to Essendon Royals.

In state league 3 north-west, Whittlesea United stayed in touch with the leaders with a 3-2 win over Upfield.

With a catch up game still to come, Whittlesea United is 10 points behind Hoppers Crossing with four games left to play.

La Trobe University upset Hoppers Crossing winning 2-0.

University is fifth on the ladder, one point ahead of Upfield and Western Eagles.

Lalor United lost 2-1 to Geelong Rangers.

Plenty Valley Lions now have three catch up games to play in the final weeks of the season in state league 4 north, after its game against Meadow Park was called off on Saturday.

The Lions tweeted out the match was called off due to Meadow Park not having paint to mark the lines.

The Lions are sixth on the ladder, 14 points behind second placed Bundoora United.

Bundoora United had a 4-2 win over Newmarket Phoenix, while Northern United defeated Northern Falcons 4-3.

Greenvale United lost 2-1 to Watsonia Heights.
