Power into the grand final

Laurimar produced one of the performances of the Northern Football League division 3 season to win through to the grand final.

The Power were seen as the underdogs heading into the grand final against a Fitzroy Stars side that hadn’t lost a game heading semi final on Saturday.

Laurimar started the game strongly and led 41-6 at quarter time.

While the Stars were able to hit the scoreboard in the second quarter, they were able to maintain the margin.

A 40-point margin stayed steady for most of the second half.

The Stars got a couple of last quarter goals to reduce the margin, but the damage was already done with Laurimar winning, 13.14 (92)-.13 (61).

Power coach Jimmy Atkins said they were thrilled to make it through to the grand final again.

It was really good and boys were impressive,” he said. “It was reward for effort.

“The underdog status didn’t exist with in our four walls. We thought were a good side all year.

“Fitzroy Stars are a good side and they will back bounce.”

Atkins said they got off to a good start and they peppered the goals early but they couldn’t covert.

Once they got going the momentum was with the Power.

“We kicked four to five goals in six to seven and got off to a flyer,” he said. “We were able to capitalise in the second quarter.”

While well in control at half time, Atkins knew the game wasn’t over especially against a side like the Stars.

Atkins said they had to continue playing for the full four quarters

“FInal siren,” he said for when he thought the game was won. “They really pick on me for that.

“Midway through the last quarter we felt like we had it done but we couldn’t capitalise on a couple of shots to make sure it was over.”

Patrick Fitzgerald kicked four goals for the Power, while Kaiden Arthur kicked three goals.

Arthur, Jai Langford, Cooper Herbert and Bailey Macleod were some of the standouts according to Atkins.

He said the backline was really strong as well.

The Power now have the week off before the grand final where it will either face the Stars or Ivanhoe.

The Power’s reserves side is also through to the grand final and has the week off as well and the under-19s will play in a preliminary final.

After coming back down into division 3, Atkins said it was nice to have another opportunity at winning a grand final.

“To have three sides still in finals is good for the culture of the club.”
