Northern Knights bested in TAC Cup decider

The Northern Knights fell agonisingly short of victory in the TAC Cup Girl’s grand final on Saturday.

Facing the Geelong Falcons, the only team to have beaten them this season, the Knights were in the game until the end.

After neither team was able to kick a goal in the first quarter, the Knights converted twice in the second through Abigail Bennett and Britney Gutknecht.

The Knights led by 13 points at the main break.

The Falcons then had their best quarter of the game, kicking three goals to nothing to take the lead heading into the final break.

The Falcons extended that lead to 16 points when Denby Taylor kicked truly in the sixth minute of the last quarter.

A goal to Ciara Fitzgerald late in the quarter reduced the margin to within two goals, but that was as close as the Knights got, with the Falcons winning 4.8 (32)-3.3 (21).

Gabrielle Newton was named the Knights’ best, with Marnie Jarvis and Ashleigh Snow also having good games.

The premiership victory means the Falcons have enjoyed a perfect season by winning all their matches.
