Honouring war veterans will be at the forefront of the minds of several Northern Football League teams this week.
Division 2 sides Lalor and Diamond Creek will play a stand-alone match on Sunday, while division 3 sides South Morang and Epping will do battle on Anzac Day.
Both matches will raise money to be donated to Epping RSL.
Lalor president Rodney Lowry said his club and Diamond Creek were keen to continue the tradition of playing each other in the round which coincides with Anzac Day.
“Diamond Creek hosted the day last year and there was a really big turnout,” Lowry said.
“This year we’re hosting the game and are working with Epping RSL to make sure the day is special.
“What better way is there to give back than to the RSL?”
Former Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy, who was integral in launching the annual Essendon-Collingwood Anzac Day match, will be guest speaker at the club’s luncheon.
The president of Epping RSL will attend the game and there will be an Anzac ceremony.
South Morang president Jim Chetcuti said his club would like to host an Anzac clash every year.
“We’re playing Epping and there’s going to be an inaugural cup and a medal awarded to the player who is best on field,” he said.
“We’d like to play Epping on Anzac Day every year, but if we’re in different divisions we’ll look to play another side.”
Epping RSL will be involved in the pre-game with an Anzac Day ceremony to be held before play.
Division 1 clubs Heidelberg and Macleod will also play on Anzac Day.
In the Essendon District Football League, Westmeadows will travel to Glenroy for their annual Anzac Day clash on Monday.
