Mernda gets serious on female footy

Mernda is hoping to field three female football sides next season.

After unsuccessfully trying to get junior sides up and running this year, the Demons are putting in lot of hard work behind the scenes to make it happen for 2018.

Demons junior club president Tom Felle said they were looking at fielding under-10, under-14 and senior women’s teams.

“We’ve had a lot of interest on social media in the last 12 months,” he said.

“We’ve have 16 girls contact us on Facebook wanting to play for the club. We then decided to put it out there to see what other interest we could get.

“At the end of the day, it’s not easy to get it off the ground from scratch and girls do go to other clubs.”

So far the club has 18 to 19 senior players interested and about 15 under-10 players.

Felle said they were working with one of the local schools to get players involved in the under-14s.

He said they were still after players for all three teams and looking for coaches for the under-14 and senior team.

So keen are the Demons to get the three sides up and running, the club is looking at ways to make the first season free for all female players.

They’ve applied for a Vic Health grant and are seeking a grant from McDonalds. They are also looking to get sponsors on board.

“If we can make it free for every female in 2018, that would be really great,” Felle said.

“We give all our players tops, but they will also get shorts and socks and playing gear. It means after the first year, they only have to pay for rego.”

Anyone interested in playing, coaching or sponsoring the teams, should contact Tom on 0402 085 187 or Georgia at georgia_vick@hotmail.com .
