Roxburgh Park isn’t measuring success by wins in the Essendon District Football League women’s division 2 competition.

Having reformed a women’s side this season, getting a side back on the park was the biggest win for the Magpies.

Coach Kevin Allan said this season has been his best football experience in a long time.

“It’s really enjoyable,” he said. “It has been frustrating at times when we haven’t had a full side, but it has been good.

“We’re not measuring success by wins, we’re measuring it by milestones. I’ve watched my daughter play footy for a few years, some people watch it for what they want it to be, not what it is.”

Allan said they had built their squad around a group of players, who had been part of their last women’s team.

He said they were keen to come back to the club and they were able to base their team around them.

“It’s all been very positive,” he said. “Everyone has been very obliging and encouraging and hopefully we can be a destination club in the next few years.

“The girls are enjoying it and everything is being taught.”

Allan said he had set high expectations himself for what the group could achieve this season.

He thought they may have won a few more games, but they’ve been competitive in all by one game.

Injuries haven’t helped the Magpies fortunes with only having 15 players against Taylors Lakes and having to play one short.

The side ran out of legs in the full quarter in that match.

“We’re improving each week,” he said. “I think we can be around the mark come finals time.

“Sunbury Lions are the benchmark and we were competitive against them for three quarters.

“We showed we’d be around the mark, I’m inwardly confident.”

“I think the wins will come as we progress.”

The Magpies this week face Glenroy, the only team it has beaten so far.

Allan said their focus was to improve on the last time they faced the Roys.
