South Morang fell just short of its first North Metro Cricket Association Lorraine Ireland Shield division 1 title on Sunday.
Playing in the top grade for the first time after winning the division 2 premiership in the spring season, the Lions made it through to the division grand final in the summer season against Heidelberg.
Heidelberg was aiming for back-to-back titles.
In a match that went the full 60 overs, Heidelberg posted a highly competitive score, led by Tahlia Meier with 54.
Meier had been the standout player with the bat this season in the competition with a couple of 100s.
The Lions had a steady run chase, led by Emma Leatham and Sarah Watson, with many contributors.
In the end they fell short, finishing 6-166.
Leatham finished with 37 for the Lions and Watson was 36 not out.
Meier was named player of the match.
South Morang said on social media it was proud of what the women’s side had achieved this season.
“A div 2 premiership and then a div 1 grand final in the same year is a huge accomplishment, and our div 3 ladies working hard on developing their skills, giving it their all each week and always playing with a smile on their face.
“We could not be prouder of our women’s playing group, and we can’t wait to see what next season holds.”
