Laurimar will get a clear indication of where it sits the next couple of weeks in the Northern Football League division 3.

Last season’s grand finalists have started the year well and are sitting 4-1, but have big clashes against Kinglake and Heidelberg West the next two rounds.

Power coach Jimmy Atkins said things were tracking along nicely so far.

“We had a good win on the weekend,” he said. “We’re going alright at the moment.

“There’s still plenty of improvement to come and we’re looking forward to next week.

Atkins said the group had returned this season very driven and motivated to go one step further.

He said in the pre-season they had spoken about what got them to a grand final and what they needed to focus on.

“We’re definitely a lot fitter than last year,” he said. “We’ve got some pretty good numbers and the under-19s and twos are doing really well.

‘We have a lot to pick from.”

On Saturday, the Power snuck home against the Old Eltham Collegians.

Scores were close all day with the Power trailing at every break.

Three goals to one in the final quarter, gave the Power an 8.10 (58)-8.5 (53).

Aktins said it could have gone either way.

“It was a tough game of footy and we had a bit of luck towards the end of the game,” he said.

“We needed some luck, we had played some really good footy.

“They had a shot that fell a metre short. [Matthew] Williamson had been kicking them all day and it was unlucky not to go through.”

Micah Vecchio was the only multiple goal kicker for the Power, kicking two goals.

Atkins said it was their leaders Ethan Frawley, Luke Wilson, Jacob Lawson and Joshua Leather who led the way in the performance.

The Power sit second on the ladder after five rounds, only behind Kinglake.

Atkins said they were in the middle of a tough period of matches.

“We had Fitzroy Stars and then Collegians and now we have Heidelberg West and Kinglake.

“We then have the bye and the King’s Birthday. We’ll know exactly how we’re going after that.

“There’s definitely some room for improvement. We need to close out a little bit better in games but we are happy with where we are at.”

In other results, Mernda had a massive win against Reservoir, winning 23.16 (154)-6.5 (41).

Kinglake snuck home against Fitzroy Stars, while Kilmore beat Heidelberg West by two points.
