Kangaroos on the right track

Greenvale Kangaroos are hoping a bit of luck goes their way in the back part of the Victorian Premier Cricket competition.

The Kangaroos have one win for the season, but have been more competitive than they’ve been the past few seasons.

Kangaroos’ coach Sunny Fernando said they felt more wins were around the corner.

“We’ve already done a lot of things right after Christmas,” he said.

“We started really strong against Dandenong. Our twos were able to get a win against a really good side.

“We’re confident that we’ll get more wins on the board. The boys are working hard.

“Sometimes you need a bit of luck in cricket.”

The Kangaroos resumed their season on Saturday against Dandenong.

The Kangaroos were sent in and made 9-262

Musa Hussain top scored with 70.

Fernando said he thought the total was a really good score.

“The wicket is really flat at Greenvale and a small mistake means it goes for four.

“It’s tough for the bowlers. We were in control for a lot of the game.”

Former captain Justin Galeotti, who returned to Tasmania this season, was back for the Kangaroos making 22 at the top of the order before being run out.

Fernando said they jumped at the chance to have the star bat play for them again.

“He had a bye and he rang me to say that he was available,” he said. “I thought why not and he will play the Saturday-Sunday game as well.

“It is exciting. We have a really good relationship.”

Dandenong guided by Dhanusha Gamage, who made 108 not out, timed the run chase to perfection as it got the runs with seven balls to spare.

Dandenong finished 4-263.

Fernando said that Dandenong batted well while they missed a couple of opportunities.

Benjamin Cliff was the only multiple wicket taker for the Kangaroos with two.

“I was happy with the performance and we played the way that we wanted to play cricket,” Fernando said.

“We’re looking to play our system and hopefully in the next few weeks we’ll get a few more wins.

“Good things are happening around the club. Hopefully the tide will turn our way.”

After 13 rounds, the Kangaroos sit 17th with one win for the season.

The Kangaroos face Footscray in a Saturday-Sunday match this weekend.

Fernando said they were a good experienced side and would be a tough opposition.
