The Greenvale Kangaroos feel disappointed after the Victorian Premier Cricket season, but will take a lot of positives into the future.
The Kangaroos won just one game for the season and finished bottom despite some improved performances.
Director of coaching Ash Cavigan said they could look at the season two different ways.
“We are disappointed with the overall ladder position,” he said. “We aimed to be definitely much better than the year before.
“We’re disappointed we didn’t track up in that area. Just measuring the season in wins and losses, doesn’t tell the whole story, but we’re not where we want to be in our progression.”
Cavigan said they were able to hit a lot of individual benchmarks throughout the season and there was definitely some improvement.
He said they had more 100s and 50s and more players averaging 30 with the bat.
“We are trending upwards from where we were the year before,” he said. “We are bridging the gap.
“There was more taking four, five wicket hauls.The guys are young and feel it is not all about the results.
“We feel we’re on the right track. We would have liked to have been further with our progress, but we feel like we are closer.”
Consistency was the key for the Kangaroos this season.
Cavigan said you are going to get that with a young group which is inexperienced.
“We need people with that experience and cricket IQ,” he said. “There were moments in games that could have gone either way.
“Those experienced players will help them learn how to navigate those moments.
“We have to go through a bit of pain, we just wish it would happen quicker.”
Skipper Justin Galeotti was the standout this season for the Kangaroos averaging nearly 60 with the bat.
Cavigan said he would be surprised and disappointed if he wasn’t named in the team of the year.
He also pointed out the seasons of Ryan Stingel as having a strong season, while the two English boys Ben Cliff and Will Luxton had OK seasons.
Cavigan said both English boys want to return next season which was a positive.
The Kangaroos will look at add some more experience and depth next season.
Cavigan said they wanted to keep the group that they have together but needed to give them some more support around them.
“We’re realistic we have to get better and we’ll keep trying to get better.”
