Hume through in cup

It wouldn’t be an Australia Cup without some magic and drama from Hume City.

The perennial finalist on Tuesday night needed nearly the whole 90 minutes to get on top on the scoreboard against the Oakleigh Cannons.

Facing the Cannons in round six, Hume City trailed at half time.

Joe Guest scored goals either side of Lloyd Isgrove’s goal to give the Cannons a lead.

Hume was finally able to equalise through Joshua Okane in the 67th minute.

Godfrey Debele scored just his second goal for Hume this season in the 83rd minute to give his side the lead for the first time for the night.

It would be enough, with Hume winning 3-2.

Speaking to Hume City media after the game, Debele said that is what cup nights are about.

“To be honest a great reaction from last week, we were working away, working away even when we went down,” he said.

“I think we were still confident enough that we would get the result.”

Debele said it felt like his goal took forever to go in.

“Boy I’m glad that it went into the back of the net,” he said. “I think it gives us a huge boost and picks up the morale in the team leading into the weekend’s game against Dandy.”

Hume joins Northcote City and Heidelberg United as the first teams through to the next round, after they also had wins on Tuesday night.

Winners in the next round will progress into the national stage of the competition.

Whittlesea United will face Dandenong Thunder in its round six match next week.

Hume is back in National Premier League action on Friday on Saturday against the Dandenong Thunder.
