Hume Hockey is already a winner in Hockey Victoria’s winter competitions, before finals have even started.
In just their second year of having senior sides, the club has again exceeded all their expectations.
Highlanders president and men’s player Hayden Whitten said they were excited by what they have achieved this season.
“The season has been a success,” he said.
“We’ve gone from one team last season to four teams this year.
“We didn’t want to set the expectations too high. Winning a final would be a bonus.”
Two of the Highlanders teams will play finals this season.
Their top men’s side will finish the regular season in third in Metro G pennant.
Many of the team were part of the Highlanders premiership last season.
They will face Footscray in a knock out semi final.
“I’m very proud of the men’s side,” he said.
“We’ve gone up two or three grades and we didn’t know how we would go.
“We’ve been very competitive. We get to have a home final against Footscray.
“There’s a bit of history there as we beat them in the grand final last year. There’s some of the same people.”
The club’s first women’s side will also play finals this year in Metro B north.
Whitten said this was really exciting for the club.
“It’s an absolute win,” he said.
“It’s far better than expected. Richard [Moore] has remembered why he started coaching.
“He’s teaching them the right way and everyone is listening and playing as a team.”
The Highlanders will play their final round matches this weekend, before finals starting the following week.
