Hume Hockey continues to exceed its own expectations in Hockey Victoria’s Women’s metro B north competition.
Fielding a team for the first time, the Highlanders are second after 10 rounds and look on track for a finals berth.
Highlanders coach Richard Moore is as shocked as anyone with his side’s results.
“I’m just amazed how quick they have picked it up,” he said.
“I thought we may have been a game or two outside the top four at this point and could have hopefully snuck into finals.
“The girls are running on enthusiasm and adrenaline.
“It’s good to see, as you don’t always get that at in the lower grades.”
Moore said the key to the side’s success had been playing as a team.
With only five or so players having played before, most of the players were learning to play the game as a unit.
“They’ve picked it up so quickly,” he said. “Improvement as a team has been the key. Sometimes you can get good individuals, but it’s hard to get that good team structure.
“Everyone is at the same level and they’re all learning at the same time.
“The way they’ve come together is really good – they’re having a ball.”
On Saturday, the Highlanders defeated Essendon 1-0.
Moore said the scoreline could have been bigger since they dominated most of the game.
Moore said that during the pre-season, they would have been happy to make finals and now will take everything in their stride.
“You never know what will happen in finals,” he said.
“Coming into finals, we just have to keep them in check and keep that fun and enthusiasm.”
The Highlanders’ top men’s side, pennant G, sits inside the top four, while their Metro B north side is fifth.
