Hume City scores an upset

Hume City has pulled off one of its biggest wins of the National Premier League season, knocking off ladder leader Heidelberg United.

Still looking to make sure it avoids relegation, Hume came out firing and went on to grab the points with a 2-0 win.

Hume captain-coach Nick Hegarty said it wasn’t the prettiest win, but it was one his team controlled.

“In terms of results, it would have to be right up there,” he said.

“The performance was very good in a lot of aspects.  On the football side, it wasn’t the best game. The opposition, weather and pitch all played a part in that.”

Despite the gap between the two sides on the ladder, Hegarty said Hume City went in with plenty of confidence.

“They are the best team around, but we got them at the end of a long week and they had a few bodies missing on the weekend,” he said. “We wanted to make the most of it.

“We scored goals in the first half at good times and then cruised home with good football in the second half.”

John Cofie and Brad Blumenthal were the goal scorers for Hume.

The win moves Hume to ninth on 26 points.

They are six points behind sixth-placed Port Melbourne Sharks, but only six points clear of 13th

Hegarty said his players had been unlucky not to come away with a few extra points in recent weeks, which would have put them right in contention for a finals spot.

He said that while they were still a chance of making finals, the first focus was making sure that they avoided relegation.

“We’re trying to win every game,” he said.

“We’re pleased with what we’ve done in the second half of the season and show that we’ve now got a squad which will challenge the top teams next season.

“We want to show we have got a quality unit now.”

In NPL 2 west, Whittlesea Ranges defeated Murray United   3-2.
