Hume City makes some great points

Hume City’s upswing has continued, with the side coming away with points in a third straight National Premier League match.

After obtaining just five points in their first 11 matches, Hume has claimed seven points in the past three weeks to start moving away from the relegation zone.

A change of luck and change of coaching direction seems to have paid off, with Hume looking a much better side.

The club’s coaching merry go round saw Nick Hegarty start the season as playing coach, before handing the reins to Terry Kirkham then returning to the role himself.

Hegarty said in hindsight the coaching situation and changes had been a blessing in disguise.

“We had someone come in and tweak a few things, but it didn’t work out,” Hegarty said.

“It was only natural to go back to what we had done. We were always close to getting the points. Since then we have had four good performances.

“It’s united the group and at this stage it may be the best thing that has happened to us.”

On Saturday night, Hume had a 1-1 draw with Kingston City.

Hegarty said it was also going to be a tough match, with several new players making their debuts for the club.

James Brown, Harry Monaghan, Aryn Williams, Will Hendon, James Kapuranovski and Thomas Barforosh all played after having come to the club in the transfer window.

The club announced the signing of Englishman John Cofie on Monday. Hegarty said Cofie is a top quality striker.

“There was a few changes and it’s always a tough ask,” he said.

“We lost a few players early in the season.

“With the transfer window, we’ve brought in a few players and added some quality to the squad.

“They’re getting to know each other.”

Of the players to leave, Atilla Ofli is the biggest name. The others include Zachary Sukunda, Mele Temguia, Andrew Pawiak, Joseph Konyit, Gian Tapia.

Hegarty said the club was happy with how the side controlled the game for long periods.

After conceding the lead, Hume struck back in the 90th minute through Oliver Kubilay.

Hegarty said it was pleasing to come away with the one point.

“If we had have scored earlier, I think we would have ended up getting the win,” he said.

“The lads are giving everything in every game. The difference now is the rub of the green is falling our way. We’ll ride it while we have it.”

Despite the good form, Hegarty said they weren’t taking anything for granted.

“We’ve added some quality to the squad and in the next three to four weeks we need to get into a position to go up the ladder,” he said.
