Hume City’s love of the FFA Cup continues with the National Premier League side through to the sixth round of the Victorian stage of the competition.
Facing Nunawading City on Wednesday night, City scored a 3-0 win at home to move through to the next round.
City technical director Dean Hennessey said the side performed strongly against a determined Nunawading City.
“We were in control of the match all game,” he said. “It could have been four or even 5-0, but we didn’t convert our chances.
“We weren’t satisfied until we had the third goal. We’re delighted – it’s a great competition.
“Hume has enjoyed the competition the last two years and we’re looking to go deep for a third year.”
Wayne Wallace scored his first goal for the club to open City’s scoring, with Atillia Ofli scoring his third goal of the FFA Cup in the 22nd minute.
Theo Markelis scored the sealer in the 77th minute.
Jayden Prasad, Dillon Jakupi, Wallace and skipper Nick Hegarty were among the best for City.
Round six of the FFA Cup will see City play North Sunshine Eagles.
The state league 1 team, which includes former City vice-captain Shane Rexhepi, won through to face City in a thrilling penalty shoot-out against fellow state league 1 side Preston Lions.
Hennessey said that despite playing a lower ranked team, City wouldn’t be taking anything for granted with upsets a common feature of the competition.
“We will take the game on the same way as we did against Nunawading and will give them the respect they deserve,” he said.
“A few of their boys were at our game on the weekend.”
The win is City’s fifth on the trot across the National Premier League and FFA Cup competitions after a slow start to the season.
Its most recent NPL win was against then top side Avondale FC.
Hennessey said attention had already been turned to the NPL clash against Heidelberg United. City continued its winning streak winning, 1-0.
Hennessey said improved defence had been a key during the winning streak.
“We’re still a work in progress,” he said. “With our last two cup wins it’s five games in a row we’ve won.
“Our defence has set up really well and we haven’t conceded any goals.
“It’s been a decent run and it’s a massive challenge to back it up from last week when we beat Avondale.”
Meanwhile, Whittlesea Ranges played a 2-2 draw with Moreland City in NPL 2 west.
