Hard work pays off for Sporting Whittlesea

Sporting Whittlesea’s late season return to form has moved it to sixth on the FFV state league 2 north-west ladder.

Having been around the relegation zone for much of the second part of the season, Sporting Whittlesea has won three out of its past four matches.

On Saturday, it defeated bottom side Sunbury United 4-3.

Daniel Giogha scored a double for Sporting Whittlesea with Daniel Paunkoski and Nicholas Vissaris also finding the back of the net.

Hume United suffered a 6-0 loss to Hoppers Crossing and slipped to ninth. Only goal difference separates Sporting Whittlesea, Fitzroy City, Corio and Hume United.

In state league 3 north-west, Whittlesea United’s hopes of a top-two finish are over after a 3-3 draw with La Trobe University.

Upfield jumped above United after a 2-1 win against Darebin United. Upfield is one goal up on goal difference. Williamstown thrashed Lalor United 6-1.

A win or draw this week will ensure the state league 4 north title for Epping City. City, which had a 4-0 win against Watsonia on Saturday, leads the title race by seven points. It has three matches remaining, including this week’s game against second-placed FC Strathmore.

Mill Park had a 1-1 draw against FC Strathmore on Saturday.
