Greenvale United has been providing plenty of entertainment in FFV state league 4 north soccer this season.
Many of United’s two wins and four draws have been exciting.
United communications officer Musti Dilek said the season so far had been thrilling for spectators.
“Almost every game has been a nail-biter,” he said.
“I’ve got no idea why, but every game has been going down to the last minute.
“Some of the games have been frustrating, as they were games we should have won. Other games, we’ve been a couple of goals down and got back into it.
“Coaches always say it’s never over until the final whistle and it’s actually happening for us.”
On Saturday, United lost 3-2 to Craigieburn City.
Despite not turning those close matches into wins, Dilek said United was playing better than last season, their first season back in state league 4 north.
Last season they finished 10th with a 7-3-12 record.
Dilek said the club had added a number of players who had experience at higher levels.
Among the signings are Adem Alicevic Mirsad Kaltak, Frankie Azzorpardi and Gurkarnvuir Singh.
“They are big recruits in terms of experience,” he said.
“They’ve been playing at higher levels. It’s beneficial, not only on game day, but at training nights as well.
“They are not only impacting on the scoreboard and field, it’s helping encourage other players to join juniors and mini-league.”
As well as some new players, the club has a new coach, with Joey Artavilla replacing Michael Eliades, who stood down from the role.
Eliades remains heavily involved in the club as vice-president.
Dilek said Artavilla had been in the game for a long time, most recently in Shepparton.
“He’s a fantastic bloke and the mindset he brings is really good,” Dilek said.
He said the club would love to get promoted this year, but that wasn’t the be all and end all
“We’re looking to get promoted, but we want to keep the team together,” he said.
“There’s no point in getting promoted and then losing the players. We should be finishing in the top half.”
