Greenvale takes off in the final quarter

A seven-goal to nil last quarter sealed a round one win for Greenvale against Avondale Heights in the Essendon District Football League’s premier division.

No more than three goals separated the two teams at the three breaks, with the Jets leading by 14 points at the last change.

The Jets, last year’s runners-up, took their game up a level in the last quarter, kicking 7.4 to one point to come away with the 18.8 (116)-8.9 (57) win.

Jacob Thompson kicked four goals for the Jets as 10 players got on the scoreboard. Four other players kicked multiple goals.

Chris Farchinone and Fort Caruso (three goals) were named the best for the Jets, who were without Addam Maric and Courtenay Dempsey.

In other games, reigning premier Aberfeldie won a thriller against Pascoe Vale, Maribyrnong Park smashed Essendon Doutta Stars and West Coburg just got home against Glenroy.

In division 2, Roxburgh Park suffered a first-up loss to Northern Saints.

The Magpies trailed early and were down by 54 points at half-time.

While they had a better second half, they were unable to close the gap, losing 24.10 (154)-12.17 (89).

East Sunbury and Moonee Valley were the other division 2 winners, with Burnside Heights having the bye.

The season proper will get under way for division 1 teams this weekend. Craigieburn will face Hillside, Jacana will unveil its flag under lights on Friday night against Westmeadows and Tullamarine faces Oak Park.
