Gisborne with upset win

Gisborne produced its best win in recent years as it knocked off Golden Square in the Bendigo Football League.

Gaining confidence off the back of two straight wins, the Bulldogs took it to another level against the highly rated Golden Square side.

The Bulldogs led at every break, as they went on to win 15.5 (95)-9.12 (66).

Gisborne coach Clinton Young was thrilled to get the win.

“We played well for four quarters and we haven’t done that in our previous losses,” he said.

“We set ourselves for a big month after coming off four straight losses.

“I’m really happy with the win and the feeling for the group. Hopefully we’ll take a lot of confidence from beating a good side like that.

“We haven’t done that for some time.”

Having control of the game at three-quarter time, Young said they knew getting off to a good start in the last quarter was important.

In other games this season, they’ve let games slip with just one poor quarter.

“We kicked the last couple of goals in the third quarter and it was the boost we needed,” Young said.

“We had more confidence going into the break and we set ourselves to start the last quarter well.

“They had a few sore players and knew if we started well, that we could run away with it.”

The Bulldogs had four players kick four goals apiece. The Bulldogs straight kicking all day proved to be the difference in the end, with Golden Square having more scoring shots.

Young was named best on ground on the online stats.

The playing coach said Jack Reaper again played well, with Heath Simpson, Matthew Goodyear, Patrick Trotta, Liam Rodgers and Ethan Minns all having strong games.

“It was an even team spread,” Young said. “A lot of players played their best game for the season.”

The win moves the Bulldogs to fifth and just percentage outside the top four.

The Bulldogs face South Bendigo this week.
