Former Northern Knight Joe Furphy has signed with Geelong as a category B rookie for the 2024 AFLseason.
Furphy, 24, who grew up in Melbourne played one game for the Northern Knights in 2018 before opting to pursue a professional basketball career.
Since deciding to head down the basketball path, Furphy has represented multiple Victorian junior basketball representative teams.
Geelong football general manager Andrew Mackie said that Furphy is a raw product who has some very exciting attributes.
“Basketball and Australian rules football have a lot of transferable skills and as a club, we are excited to see what Joe can do as part of our development program,” he said.
“With Joe already spending time in various different sporting environments, we feel he is well placed to take on the challenge of being an AFL player.”
Furphy, who is 203 centimetres tall, said it is a pretty surreal feeling to sign with the Cats.
“Geelong is such a great club with a rich history and strong values,” he said.
I’m thankful for the opportunity to pursue a football career and I’m looking forward to starting pre-season.”
Furphy will join his Geelong teammates in November when the club returns for 2024 pre-season training.
