Greenvale Kangaroos coach Sunny Fernando will walk away from the Victorian Premier Cricket club proud with what he has achieved.
The Kangaroos announced ahead of the side’s final round match, that Fernando would be standing down after three seasons in charge.
For Fernando, he felt it was the right time to step away and let someone take the group to the next stage.
“I’ve spent three years at the club in a difficult time,” he said. “The club is in a better position now and it’s time for someone else to take over.
“From the top down, it’s really hard to recruit players. We have done a great job and they’re in a good position and competing every week.”
Fernando said he was proud of what he had achieved across the club.
When he arrived several players had departed the club and it was a whole rebuild from the bottom up.
Most of the playing group has been developed the past three years.
“Premier cricket is hard,” he said. “Other clubs have experienced guys, state guys.
“They have pathway players and we didn’t have that.
“We had local cricketers who we had to develop into premier players.”
While there’ve been so many positives the past couple of seasons, wins have still been hard to come by.
Fernando said he felt that they would start to come in the next two to three years.
The Kangaroos will have a task ahead of them to finish their season on a high. The Kangaroos first XI side has just one win for the season.
Facing Geelong in the final round, the Kangaroos are on the back foot after day one.
Geelong was bowled out for 302 in the 89th over with Eamonn Vines scoring 101 not out.
Benjamin Cliff took 4-54 for the Kangaroos, while Musa Hussain took 3-47.
It was a less than ideal start to their innings for the Kangaroos, as they lost two early wickets.
The Kangaroos will resume at 2-10.
Ryan Stingel, six not out, and Odil Perera, one not out, will resume on day two.
Fernando said anything can happen and hoped they could find a few partnerships.
“It’s a good batting track,” he said. “Hopefully we can find a positive end.”
Fernando said he would let the dust settle on this season before deciding where his future lies.
He said he was hoping to still be involved in Premier Cricket.
