Eagles, Sharks get wins first up

Craigieburn came home with the first Bridgewater Cup after beating Roxburgh Park on Good Friday in the Essendon District Football League division 1.

Facing each other for the first time on Good Friday, the match turned out to be the men’s match of the day, with the other two matches one-sided.

The Magpies led by one point at quarter time, before the Eagles kicked four goals to three in the second quarter to take a four point lead into half time.

That margin was reduced to just one point at the last break, setting up a thrilling last quarter.

The Eagles kicked the only two goals of the last quarter, to seal the 9.9 (63)-7-10 (52) win.

Jake Carlisle, Sammy Laffan and Stephen Tsonas kicked two goals each for the Eagles.

Jamie Gorgievski was named his side’s best along with Benjamin Fynch and Jacob Aquilina.

For the Magpies, Cooper McPharlane, Brendan Egberts and Luke Reichelt kicked two goals each for the Magpies.

Harley Short and Ryan Micallef were named the Magpies best.

In the other division 1 game on Good Friday, Hillside proved too strong for Keilor Park.

The Sharks led throughout the match and were able to extend the lead in every quarter.

The Sharks won 16.11 (107)-5.10 (40).

Josh Covelli kicked four goals for the winners, while Anthony Prestia kicked three in his debut for the Sharks.

Tristan Rudic and Zac Wunhym were the best for the winners.

Jordan Filakis and Oscar Sasalu were the best of Keilor Park with Sasalu the only multiple goal kicker with two.
