Diamond Valley sides get cracking

Several clubs made the most of what little sunshine there was on the weekend on Sunday in the Diamond Valley Cricket Association.

With two-day matches scheduled across Saturday and Sunday, players were left to twiddle their thumbs on Saturday as rain prevented play.

Sunday was a different story, with several matches getting under way.

Epping and Old Paradians/St Francis proved to be the big winners in the Barclay Shield, both recording victories.

In difficult conditions, batsmen struggled to get going in the match between Epping and Research Eltham Collegians.

Collegians reached a measly 73 in their innings, Epping captain John Lever starring with the ball by taking 4-6.

In reply, Epping also had its issues but reached the target with five wickets in hand.

The win moves Epping to the top of the table, with two wins from as many matches.

Old Paradians/St Francis’ total of 130 proved too tough for Rosanna.

Damian Wegener, at the top of the order, was top scorer for the Wolves, with most players struggling to get going.

Rosanna had just as many troubles with the bat and bowled out for 96. Only two players made double figures.

Udhara Hewa Wellalage took three wickets for the Wolves.

In the Money Shield, there were results in three of the five matches.

Whittlesea chased down Mernda’s 174 at Waterview South Reserve.

Bageshwar Bisht was the anchor of Mernda’s innings, making 52 as his side set a more than competitive total.

But Whittlesea’s batsmen found their groove, three 50-run partnerships getting them over the line.

They made 5-176, getting there with nine balls remaining in the innings.

Nuwan Poojitha made 74 at the top of the order before being run out.

Heidelberg and Eltham were the other winners.
