Craigieburn Falcons flying high

Craigieburn Falcons have enjoyed a weekend to remember in Hockey Victoria winter competition.

They had five teams compete in finals on the weekend, with four claiming victories.

Three won through to grand finals to be played in two weeks.

The Falcons’ Sikander Sharma said it was really exciting for the club to have this much success what was only their second year.

“It’s a big moment and everyone is excited,” he said.

“We want to win at least four titles and we think it is quite possible now.

“We know we are quite ambitious.”

The Falcons’ Vic League 2 men’s team won through to the grand final with a 3-1 win against ECHO on Saturday.

The first half was even, before the Falcons stepped it up in the second to come away with the victory.

A premiership would be a second in a row for this team, having dominated both competitions it’s been in.

Sharma said they were looking at the possibility of moving the team up to VIC League 2 next season.

The men’s metro B north west team defeated Altona, 3-2.

The pennant G side won its knock-out semi-final, beating Melton 3-2. It will face Melbourne University this week for a grand final spot.

On Sunday, the women’s team won through to a grand final in its first year by beating another first-year side, Sunshine, 4-2.

The club’s two under-14 sides had mixed results.

The mixed pennant north-east side continued its winning run by beating Yarra Valley, 6-0.

Craigieburn Falcons under-14 mixed district north-west team was knocked out.

Their masters over 35 team was due to play on Monday night for a spot in the grand final.
