Colleen Planeta has capped off her career with the Hume City Broncos by winning a third Big V women’s state championship ‘most valuable player’ award.
Since joining the Broncos at the start of the 2014 season, Planeta has dominated the Big V competition, so much so she’s landed a Women’s National Basketball League contract with the Adelaide Lightning.
On Saturday night, she was again named MVP for the Big V state championship division, after averaging 23.4 points and 10.6 rebounds per game.
Planeta was also named in her division’s all-star five.
It’s the third successive year in which she’s been both MVP and one of the all-star five.
In her three years with the Broncos, Planeta also shared in two titles, her team finishing runner-up in the other year. And as well as being a grand final MVP, in 2014 she was named ‘defensive player of the year’.
Coming off the WNBL season, the much-travelled Planeta plans to head home to America.
Meanwhile, Broncos’ women’s coach Katrina Hibbert has been named coach of the year after leading the side to the championship, losing just one match for the season.
Like Planeta, it was Hibbert’s last season at the Broncos. She has since joined the Melbourne Boomers coaching ranks.
In men’s competition, Lee Jeka, who led the state championship in points per game, was named in that division’s all-star five team.
Jeka, who missed several weeks midseason to get married, averaged 25.7 points a game.
In other awards, Whittlesea Pacers’ Jack Petruccelle won the rising star gong in the youth league division 1, having been a nominee last year. Petruccelle was also named in the youth league men’s division 1 team of the year.
Craigieburn’s Liam Watt was named defensive player of the year in men’s division 2.
