Bundoora is hoping to regain some confidence in the Northern Football League Women’s competition.
After a division 3 premiership in their first year, the Bulls struggled in division 1 last year and were winless.
The Bulls are hoping to be graded into division 2 this year and they can start to rebuild the side.
New Bulls coach Amy Callaway said last year had been a tough one for the group.
“We always thought it would be a struggle and pleaded to be in division 2,” she said. “They [the league] had other ideas and a few girls have left as they were disillusioned.
“Hopefully this year we can be in division 2 and hopefully rebuild and get a few wins on the board and get the confidence back.”
Callaway has been part of the Bulls’ women’s program since it started three seasons ago.
She said she was keen to step up into the coaching role when Gary Moorcroft stepped down after two seasons in charge.
“My dad played football at Bundoora and I’ve been around the club since I was a kid. It’s such a great football club and once Gary stepped down I thought I might put my hand up to coach the girls.
“My dad also coaches at the club and I look up to him.”
Callaway previously coached Diamond Creek’s women’s reserves side and helped out with Auskick in Yarrambat.
She said having had Moorcroft, a Bundoora club legend and AFL premiership player, as coach had been fantastic for the group.
“I have big shoes to fill and he’s given me a lead into this role. He’s always there.”
Callaway, who will continue to play this season, has also played 100 games of football, making her one of the most experienced players in the Bulls line-up.
She said there had been some good numbers at training, but they were looking to add a few more players to the group.
Anyone of any ability is welcome to come down with their youngest player 16.
“We started training back at the end of October and we got a good couple of months leading into Christmas,” Callaway said.
“We started back at the end of January and the numbers have been good. “We’ve been learning more drills and the skill level has picked up since the start of October.”
Callaway said the focus for the side this season was rebuilding and looking at the long-term future of the club.
