Broncos eyeing a top four performance

Hume City Broncos will be gunning for a top four finish in the 2022 Big V Championship women’s contest, according to incoming head coach Robbie Baldwin.

Baldwin comes to the Broncos with vast Big V experience, having played and subsequently coached for over 30 years.

Most recently, Baldwin was the women’s head coach at Diamond Valley in National Basketball League 1 South competition for the 2021 season.

Baldwin said the competitive spirit at the Broncos attracted him to the club.

“They’ve always been competitive,” he said.

“I’ve been impressed with their program for over 30 years, both playing and coaching against them.

“I thought it would be a good chance to come in and keep working with them and developing them.

“I also thought it would be a good chance to show the younger players that if you work at it, there is somewhere to go with this sport.”

Baldwin said he had some clear goals for the side heading into season preparations.

“I’d obviously like to make finals,” he said.

“Most teams I’ve coached in the past have made finals.

“I’d also like to add pieces to the group, and more experienced heads, and maybe an import.

“We’ll definitely be pushing to be in the top four teams, come the end of the season.”

The Broncos were seventh on the ladder with four wins when the season was called off early due to the pandemic.

With pre-season training starting up next week, Baldwin said he was looking forward to developing a game plan with the players.

“I’ve watched through some of the games from last season,” he said.

“There’s been some players who have moved on, they’ve moved to another club or on to something else.

“So in a couple of weeks, I’ll show up to training and see what hands I’ve been dealt, how we’re looking.

“I’m looking forward to it.”
