The future is now for the Hume City Broncos in the Big V women’s state championship.
The Broncos have focused on youth this season with the club wanting to build for the future.
New coach Tim Devlin said they were pretty excited about what the group could do. Delvin coached the club’s youth league side last season.
“Things are going great,” he said. “We are happy the majority of the players have come through the Broadmeadows system.
“Some through the youth league and a lot of junior players. Everyone is familiar with each other.”
Delvin said they had made a real focus of putting together a squad of local players.
While Devlin is new to this role, he has coached all but two of the squad previously. He said it had made the transition into coaching the side easier.
Delvin said there were plenty of exciting players to watch this season into the future,
Last season’s Victorian youth league championship most valuable player Emma Povh has made the set up into state champ.
Chrisoula Triantafyllopoulos, who was the Victorian youth league leading rebounder, is another to step. She is currently out injured.
Oriana-Rose Siamoa was the other youngster that Delvin is excited to see.
The Broncos lost their first game of the season, losing to the defending champions Wyndham, 92-66.
Import Kayonna Lee top scored with 15 points.
Delvin said there was one area that was the difference in the game.
“We are a really talented team,” he said. “I think what hurt us on Saturday was the physicality.
“The physicality was the next level.”
The Broncos have a double header this weekend, facing Camberwell on Saturday afternoon and then the Sunbury Jets on Sunday.
Delvin said there were no expectations on this season.
“We don’t want to put a ceiling on what we can achieve,” he said. “We want to play the best that we can and don’t want to limit ourselves.”
