Thomastown Football Club’s very own Ernie O’Brien has been recognised as the AFL Victoria State Metro Volunteer of the Year.

O’Brien was awarded for his volunteering during the 2021 AFL Victoria Community Football Awards, which recognise the contribution made to Australian Football across the state.

With over 40 years of experience in the football industry, O’Brien has contributed to the Bears in a variety of roles.

O’Brien said there were two elements from his time with the Bears that stood out as his fondest memories.

“[One of my] fondest memories of the Bears is the friendships I’ve made over the years,” he said.

“Many are my lifelong friends.

“Also the 1983 premiership side, which was the champion of champions.

“It’s a highlight of [mine].”

O’Brien said there was only one reason behind his vast volunteering with the club, from starting as a player, to acting as club secretary.

“You do it because you love it,” he said.

Club president Rob Mazniovski said O’Brien made a big impact with the Bears.

“He calls himself the cleaner, but he’s a lot more than that,” Mazniovski said.

“He’s selfless, he’s dedicated, he’s passionate.

“He’s fantastic to have, and we absolutely love him.

“You mention Ernie O’Brien around the league or within the club, everyone knows who he is, and everyone speaks highly of him.”
