Hume Hockey Club will field a women’s side for the first time this year.

After having a men’s side for the first time last season, a women’s side was the club’s next priority.

When Richard Moore approached the club about coming on board to coach, those plans started falling into place.

Moore, who coached at LaTrobe University Hockey Club the past four years, said he was excited about helping to build the side from the ground up.

“I heard a few years ago about the club and thought it was a good opportunity to get hockey happening in the area,” he said.

“I rang them up … they said they weren’t looking to have a women’s team for a few years.

“Then late last year, I got in touch with them again and it snowballed from there.”

Having coached at a higher level, he said starting a side would be a new challenge.

He said the club had a number of players interested in playing, but was still looking for more.

His daughters have followed to the club and will be part of the team.

“There’s a number of players who have never played before,” he said.

“That will be a challenge, but it’ll be about teaching them the right way from the start.

“I’ll take a step back and forget the fantasy stuff and focus on the basic skills and some gameplans. I’ve got a few tricks that I will be able to teach them.”

Moore’s aim for the season is to be competitive – anything more than that will be a bonus.

“I want to be part of something special at the club,” he said. “I love a challenge.”

It’s been a big 12 months for the club, which claimed the Hockey Victoria men’s Metro B north-west premiership last year.
