VSDCA: RoxburghPark-Broadmeadows on top with win over Werribee

RoxburghPark-Broadmeadows provided more evidence it’s a sub-district cricket premiership contender at the weekend.

The Falcons flashed their impressive credentials in a 39-run win away over north-west group powerhouse Werribee.

The red-hot Falcons moved to the top of the ladder and head into Saturday’s final round one-dayer against Sunshine odds-on to stay there ahead of the finals.

Mitchell Streiff starred for the Falcons with a maiden first XI century as Roxburgh Park-Broadmeadows posted 8-259 off 80 overs on day one.

It was more than enough for the Falcons to defend as they rolled Werribee for 220.

The one-two punch of Patrick Matautaava (4-56) and Mitchell Johnstone (4-76) was too much for the home side to handle.

Johnstone is the competition’s second-ranked bowler with 37 wickets at 13.03, while Matautaava is fourth with 32 at 12.59.

Having two of the top four bowlers has gone a long way to helping the Falcons close in on the minor premiership.

Meanwhile, Plenty Valley surrendered top billing with an ugly loss to Melton.

The Bats were bowled out for 61 in their first dig, and although Melton fared only slightly better with 9-78 declared, it was enough to shake up the order at the top.

The Bats batted a second time, finishing on 6-157.
