AFL draft: Players to watch from local clubs

Peter Wright

Moonee Valley/Calder Cannons

Once touted as a number one draft pick, Wright is now more likely to go middle-late first round. He can play ruck or forward and there’s debate over his best position. On his day can take control of a match and put it out of reach of other teams.

Damian Cavka

Keilor/Cannons

Was the Cannons’ best player in the finals until an injury saw him miss the TAC Cup final. His run and carry and goal sense should have him picked up within the first two rounds.

Touk Miller

Maribyrnong Park/Cannons

A leader and someone who can find the ball, it’s a little unclear where Miller will go in the draft. At 178cm, he’s on the short side, but Miller plays above his height and gets plenty of the ball, with an average 22 disposals in the TAC Cup.

Paul Ahern

Keilor/Cannons

Ahern’s class and skill should see him go early in the draft. A little inconsistent across the TAC Cup season, but he keeps his best for the big games. Starred in the national carnival and was close to the Cannons’ best in their grand final loss.

Jake Lever

Romsey/Cannons

Possibly the best tall defender in the draft. Missed the whole 2014 TAC Cup season with a knee injury, but still a top-five prospect.

Reece McKenzie

Marcellin College/Northern Knights

A power forward who’s quick off the mark, McKenzie can kick big bags of goals. His marking is a feature of his game and he was the best contested mark of the TAC Cup.

Kyle Langford

Ivanhoe Grammar/Knights

Likely to be the first Knights player to go in the draft and should find himself a home by the end of the second round. He can play both ends of the ground and has endurance, running a 14.6 beep test at the national combine.

Jason Castagna

Warrandyte/Marcellin College/Knights

A small-medium defender who’s known for taking on his opponents and his run and carry. He has speed and endurance, and tested well in both the 20-metre sprint and beep test. Can also play forward if needed.

Jayden Short

Mill Park/Knights

A late-season bolter, Short’s disposal is the key to his game. Loves to kick long and had the best kicking efficiency in the TAC Cup this season. A broken jaw meant he played only 13 games in 2014, meaning he missed try-outs for the Vic Metro team.
