T20 Blast School Cup: Westmeadows Primary School wins titles

Westmeadows Primary School took out the boys’ and girls’ titles in the Gladstone Park Sports District annual MILO T20 Blast School Cup on Friday.

The cup involved 33 teams from Westmeadows, Gladstone Park, Gladstone Views, Meadows, Dallas Brooks Community, Coolaroo South and Campbellfield Heights primary schools, Aitken College and Broadmeadows Valley. Each team played at least four games over one day at Jacana Reserve.

Cricket Australia’s Wayne Schultz, who ran the event with Cricket Victoria’s Dan Trevillian, said the day was about trying to generate excitement and get children involved in cricket.

“The matches were played on smaller grass fields with smaller boundaries to inspire countless fours and sixes,” Schultz said.

“With music playing and 16 games taking place at the same time, it created an action-packed, fun atmosphere where every student was involved.”

Westmeadows boys’ and girls’ teams, who beat Aitken College and Dallas Brooks Community schools in the finals, will now represent the district at the regional MILO T20 Blast School Cup carnival in Epping this month.

Schultz said schools were a very important channel for introducing young people to cricket.

“Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia hope the next step for MILO T20 Blast School Cup participants is to register for the full 12-week program,” Schultz said.

“Westmeadows Cricket Club hopes to start up a girls’ cricket team [with players] from today’s carnival.”
