Metropolitan pennant bowls: Bundoora RSL primed for tilt at title

A number of off-season additions has Bundoora RSL primed for a tilt at the Metropolitan pennant bowls title.

After finishing sixth in the premier division last season, the RSL has added nine players who could be part of the club’s top side.

Coach Ian Ewing said the club had got lucky with the new recruits.

“It has certainly increased depth markedly across all our grades,” he said.

“We think we’re in a good place. A couple of strong sides in the north have had some issues at their clubs, which has seen us get players.

“We got five from Moonee Ponds and three from Lalor. It’s good that players see the RSL as a place to come.”

Ewing said a couple of them would walk straight into the premier side.

“Adam Galloway and Brett Spurr are in the current state squad,” Ewing said.

“They will strengthen our back end, an area where we’ve been a little soft.”

Ewing said Bundoora RSL had a couple of promising younger players who he hoped would continue to develop.

“We already have a couple of younger blokes in the premier side and we’re hoping they can develop further.

“Joshua Corless is representing Victoria in the under-18 national championships this week and is a really good player.”

Ewing said the club had set its goals high for this season.

“We’re certainly hoping to make a grand final,” he said.

“That would be the ultimate goal. Anything can happen.

“The influx of players has given us tremendous depth through all our seven sides.

“We certainly believe we’ll be a contender across all our divisions.”

Bundoora RSL faces Essendon in the opening round of the pennant season at Essendon at 1pm on Saturday.

The club’s second side is at home to Deer Park in division 1, section 1.

Whittlesea will play MCC at MCC in the same division.
