MH17 DISASTER: Silence to remember Albert and Maree Rizk | Video

UPDATE: Emotions were high as the Sunbury Lions Football Club took to the field against Redan, one day after losing one of its committee members on Malaysia Airlines flight MH17/

Albert Rizk and his wife Maree were among the 298 people who died on the plane which was shot down over Ukraine on Friday.

After contemplating postponing its match against Redan, the Lions decided the match would still go ahead.

A minute’s silence was held and the Lions wore black arm bands.

Coach Rick Horwood said his players ran out of steam in the final quarter, losing 11.9 (75) to 8.6 (54).

“I do not think there is anything tougher they could have dealt with,” said Horwood following the game.

“I am super proud of how they performed and they couldn’t give any more.

“The players were emotional after the game and very mentally drained.”

The Rizks son James, who was originally named in the team for the match, didn’t take to the field.

“He came and watched the game and addressed the boys after the game,” Horwood said.

“It was pretty emotional. He is a strong young fellow.”

A minute’s silence was also held at the Riddell District Football League clash between Sunbury Kangaroos and Rupertswood. See video below.

Albert was formerly a committee member of the Kangaroos junior club, while Maree helped out at the club.

James went to school at Salesian College, which shares its home with the Rupertwsood club.

Kangaroos’ football manager Mick Streiff said he had seen the Rizks just before they left for their trip.

“They were looking forward to the trip so much and we had been looking at their photos on Facebook.

“They were a great couple to have a around. They were energetic and always smiling.

“Both were genuine people. We formed a great bond with them and shared birthdays and weekends away with them.

“I can’t believe it has happened.”
