EDFL: Slow start, then Jets fly home against Aberfeldie

Greenvale’s come-from-behind win against Aberfeldie on Saturday is one of the best wins Jets coach Adam McPhee has been involved with at the Essendon District Football League club.

Down by 26 at half-time against third- placed Aberfeldie, the Jets kicked seven goals to three in the third term to get back into the match.

And they maintained the momentum on the way to a 13.8 (86) to 10.17 (77) scoreline, the Jets’ fifth victory in a row in Premier division.

McPhee said it was his best win as club coach against a side which “embarrassed” his team in round one.

“We were still in with a chance at half-time,” he said. “After the break we stuck to our game plan and were more disciplined.”

He said changes he made at half-time worked. “I think we were trying hard but weren’t winning the ball around the stoppages, meaning Aberfeldie was pushing it forward and putting pressure on us,” McPhee said. “We knew other teams had been able to run over Aberfeldie and we thought that with our fitness we could do it, too.

“I moved Simon Potter from the ruck to centre-half back and we were also able to utilise our midfielders in the forward line.”

McPhee said Stephen Brewer was best on ground, and he highlighted the defensive roles of Daniel Campisano and Brett Stillman.

“Defensively, we’ve been a lot better and it allows us to attack,” McPhee said.

The Jets, fifth on the ladder, have another tough match this weekend against unbeaten Avondale Heights.

“We knew we had a big month ahead of us against the teams in finals contention, which would give a clear indication whether we would play finals,” McPhee said.

“We’ve won the first two of those games and are hoping to win at least three of the four.”

In division 1, Westmeadows held on in a thriller against Taylors Lakes, winning 8.11 (59) to 7.11 (53); Tullamarine was too strong for Hillside, and Craigieburn beat Hadfield for its second win of the season.
