TAC Cup: Cannons keep rolling with win over Bendigo Pioneers

The Calder Cannons continued their winning ways with a strong TAC Cup performance against Bendigo Pioneers at Highgate Reserve on Saturday.

The Cannons kicked five goals to none in the first quarter, opening up a break that would end up being the difference between the two teams. Calder went on to win by 27 points, 14.10 (94) to 9.13 (67).

The teams traded goals in the second quarter as the Pioneers fought to get into the game. The margin was reduced to 22 points by half-time.

But the Cannons were able to keep the Pioneers at arm’s length in the second half, recording a comfortable win. Calder’s Hisham Kerbatieh was best on ground with five goals, while Vic Metro representatives Matthew Goodyear, Peter Wright and Paul Ahern were among the better players.

The Northern Knights gave up a 26-point lead against the Western Jets, losing by 14 points at Preston Oval on Sunday.

The home side came out firing in the first quarter, kicking 6.4 to 2.2. But the Jets started to reduce the margin in the second term, winning more of the ball and trailing by 19 points at the main break.

In the second half, Western showed why it’s third on the ladder, kicking nine goals to Northern’s three. The Knights didn’t help themselves, wasting opportunities in front of goal with nine behinds after the main break.

Kieran Malone kicked three goals for the Knights, with Ryan Tester and Samuel Switkowski the best for the home side.

The Knights (2-6) are 10th on the ladder, while the Cannons (7-1) are second. This week, the Cannons face Gippsland Power in Morwell, while the Knights will visit Dandenong.
