NFL: Bundoora bounces back against Macleod Kangaroos

Bundoora was caught napping in the opening term of its clash with Macleod in Northern Football League division 1 on Saturday.

The Kangaroos jumped out of the blocks, with six goals to one, to open up a 31-point lead by quarter-time. But in a stunning transformation, the Bulls kept the Roos to three more goals for the rest of the game, booting 13 of their own to win 14.8 (92) to 9.12 (66) at
DE Winton Park.

Bulls manager Darryl Richards said the coaching staff had one message at quarter time. “Phil [Plunkett] said we had to get the footy first and claw back, quarter by quarter. In the first term there was a lack of accountability. After quarter time our attack on the ball was the fiercest I’ve ever seen.

“Macleod played perfect footy in the first term. After that we didn’t let them play that sort of footy.”

Bundoora midfielders Joe Palazzolo and Glenn Grgic were tough in and under, while Salvatore Mamone kicked three goals.

Richards said the previous week’s loss to West Preston Lakeside was the wake-up call the side needed.

“We would have been happy to be sitting top, but we’re happy to be in second. Our good players are running s into form and we’ve had a few injuries, so a number of guys from our reserves and under-19 side will get an opportunity in the seniors.”

Matt Dennis and Ricky Dyson will miss at least two more weeks, while Gary Moorcroft will miss two through suspension.

In other weekend games, Whittlesea lost to Montmorency, 24.18 (162) to 3.10 (28).
