Big V basketball: Craigieburn Eagles edge plucky Whittlesea Pacers

Craigieburn and Whittlesea fought out a tight contest in women’s basketball Big V division 1 on Saturday night, with the Eagles scraping across the line at Mill Park Stadium.

In a physical game, neither team was able to break away, with scores level going into the last quarter. A 13-11 final term secured a two-point win for the Eagles, 65-63.

The Eagles started the better of the two sides. Both teams put up the same number of shots for the first term, but Craigieburn took a five-point lead into the first break. The Pacers reduced the deficit to one-point by the main interval.

On resumption, the game continued along a similar pattern, the Eagles taking more shots while the points scored remained even.

For the Eagles, Ellie McLean top- scored with 20 points before going off injured. Kellie Burbridge led the Pacers with 17 points.

In men’s division 1, the Eagles travelled to Warrnambool and were on the wrong end of an 89-69 result. Kane McNamara led the Eagles with 19 points.

In the men’s championship division, the Pacers held off a fast-finishing Diamond Valley by two points, 93-91.

The Pacers held a 31-point lead heading into the final term, but a 39-10 quarter turned the game into a cliffhanger. Michael Petridis top-scored for the Pacers with 25 points.
