Sporting Whittlesea overcame a depleted Hume United to record its first win of the season in FFV men’s State League 2 north-west on Saturday.
United got the early jump on Sporting with a goal in the first half. Sporting hit back before half-time then it pouched the only goal in the second half to win 2-1 at RGC Cook Reserve.
Sporting coach Kevin Theuma said the win was a weight off the team’s shoulders.
He said United’s early goal had sparked his side into action.
“We were pretty much in control for the whole game but didn’t put away our chances. They scored against the run of play early and we got one back before half time.
“The second goal came in the last 10-15 minutes, but we had seven or eight chances where we should have scored.”
Robbie Panetta and Nick Posada scored the two goals for the winners.
We’ve been unlucky in the first few rounds,’’ Theuma said.
“We’re still a young side and we are trying to build for the long term.’’
United coach Tony Neceski said he was disappointed with the result, despite going into the game undermanned.
“We had four players missing and it was wet, windy and raining, which made the conditions hard.
“Both teams had a lot of opportunities and they started the second half better and got the second goal.”
Neceski said his side’s performance was “pretty average”.
In State League 1 north-west, Fawkner defeated Fitzroy City 3-0.
