The Craigieburn Softball Centre is taking shape, with the first sod turned at the future site.

The $5 million project will become the new home of the Craigieburn Eagles softball club, following an increase in interest in the sport, according to the state government.

The centre is funded by the state government’s Growing Suburbs Fund.

A Craigieburn Softball Club spokesperson said the construction of the centre was a long time coming.

“We have been talking and campaigning with council over the past seven years to find us a home to play softball and finally our dreams have come true,” the spokesperson said.

“Our members are very excited to see this project come together and we can’t wait to show it off to our community and get them involved in this family sport for all age groups.”

Hume mayor Joseph Haweil, Yuroke MP Ros Spence and Local Government Minister Shaun Leane attended the sod turning ceremony, alongside club members and staff.

“The new softball centre will feature two softball fields, with space available for two more and more open areas for the community,” Mr Leane said.

Construction is expected to be completed in 2022.
