Whittlesea residents experiencing homelessness or escaping family violence will be able to access more social housing close to home thanks to new funding from the state government.

The government has committed to helping fund 175 new social housing dwellings in Whittlesea as part of its Social Housing Growth Fund.

The fund, which was set up in 2018, will deliver more than 780 new properties across the state.

The government plans to fund up to 2200 new social housing dwellings and leases for people in need of accommodation by 2023.

Eligible community housing organisations have access to low-interest loans in combination with the fund, helping them to deliver big social housing developments.

Thomastown MP Bronwyn Halfpenny said the government was planning to build new social housing in Mernda, Bundoora, Epping, Hampton Park, Thornbury and Grovedale.

“The Social Housing Growth Fund will provide funds for much-needed housing for those in need,” she said.

“A number of new homes will be built as part of the Riverlee estate on Cooper Street, which is great news.”
