Whittlesea dog owners are being warned to have their dogs on leads following an increase in dog attacks and incidents with dogs off leashes since stage 4 lockdown began.
Whittlesea council director of partnerships planning and engagement Julian Edwards said there had been 12 dog attack reports since the beginning of stage 4 restrictions.
“Most of these minor attacks have occurred where dogs have approached people and dogs walking on the footpath,” he said.
“We have issued 22 official warnings in the last two weeks for off lead offences, and issued two infringements for off lead offences for repeat offenders.
“Being at home is allowing pet owners to spend more quality time with their furry family members.
“While working from home, working in the yard or gardening it is important that dogs are securely confined to the property. If dogs have access to the footpath they are not securely confined to the property. Dogs must also always be on leash in any public area, apart from designated off leash parks.”
Edwards said that under council’s COVID-Safe plan they will continue to patrol the city to ensure dog owners have their pets under control.
“We encourage people to call us if they have any issues as this may help prevent any future attacks. Working together we can keep the City of Whittlesea safe for everyone.”
Fines of $165 can be issued for not having your dog securely confined to your property. Wandering at large fines start at $248 and then $330 for a night time offence.
