Whittlesea council’s Carols by Candlelight event is returning in-person for the first time since 2019.

This year’s carols will be a hybrid event, being held both in person and online on Friday, December 10.

The carols were a solely online event last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but will return home to the Terrace Lawns at the Civic Centre in South Morang for 2021.

Chair administrator Lydia Wilson said she was thrilled to see live events like the carols returning.

“We are very much looking forward to seeing the community come together again and carols marks a welcome return to in-person events in the City of Whittlesea,” she said.

“I’ll be attending along with my fellow Administrator Peita Duncan and [chief executive] Craig Lloyd and it’s going to be brilliant to be able to catch up with members of the community in person again.

“It’s been a long couple of years for us all, so to return gathering in a COVID-safe way and bringing some festive season joy to everyone will be wonderful.”

The family friendly picnic-style event will include Christmas carol favourites and a celebration of customs from the municipality’s diverse community.

Gates will open at 6pm, with roving entertainment between 6pm and 8pm, and the official carols will start at 7.30pm.

The event will be livestreamed via the council’s Facebook page and Arts website, including Auslan interpreters

The event is free, but bookings are required and attendees will be required to show evidence of their COVID-19 vaccination.
