What started with a simple Facebook post has quickly blossomed into one of Whittlesea’s most vibrant community groups and its members have their hearts firmly set on giving back.
VIEW (Voice, Interests and Education for Women), a national women’s volunteer organisation, officially launched its Whittlesea branch in October 2023 with just 25 members.
Less than a year on, the group has almost doubled in size, with close to 50 women now meeting regularly.
“It’s grown quite quickly,” club president Julie Burgess said.
“It probably shows the social isolation people are facing, and we’re making sure women have opportunities to socialise.”
Beyond the friendships and monthly gatherings, there’s a powerful purpose behind every cup of coffee and raffle ticket – supporting The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program, which helps disadvantaged students access education.
VIEW is currently sponsoring two Learning for Life students, with the hopes of a third student this year.
“In our first year, we donated a digital learning package to The Smith Family worth $1000,” Ms Burgess said.
“It’s amazing. It gives students a device to allow internet access and technical support. Education is the key to getting out of poverty.”
Vice-president Joy O’Callaghan said the club meets every second Thursday at the Whittlesea Bowling Club, where guest speakers, raffles, and a shared lunch are all part of the fun.
But their work doesn’t stop there.
“We have coffees, barbecues at Bunnings, and all sorts of events to raise funds,” Ms O’Callaghan said.
Ms Burgess hopes the organisation will continue to grow.
“We had around 40 women here today. For me, it’s about maintaining those numbers and increasing the number of students we are supporting.”
