Victoria Police roll out number plate scanning tech

Victoria Police has established new technology that will allow them to scan for unlicensed drivers.

The automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) equipment will be attached to more than 200 police vehicles later this month.

More than 1700 unauthorised motorists were detected in Victoria Police’s 10-day Christmas operation.

Victoria Police road policing assistant commissioner Glenn Weir said these drivers have no right to be on Victorian roads.

“They pose a significant risk not only to themselves but to all road users,” Mr Weir said.

“Automatic number plate recognition technology gives us another set of eyes on the roads to stop these drivers in their tracks.”
