Urgent call to fix “dangerous” Roxburgh Park roads

Northern Metropolitan Liberal MP Evan Mulholland has urged the state government to upgrade roads in Roxburgh Park.

Mr Mulholland is calling for urgency in duplicating Somerton Road and upgrading the “dangerous” Roxburgh Park Drive intersection.

“There is no commitment, no funding, and instead just more neglect of the north from this … government,” Mr Mulholland said.

Mr Mulholland raised the issue in parliament, urging the Roads and Road Safety Minister Melissa Horne to act on planning work that was completed in 2023.

“If relevant authorities have identified the need for an upgrade along Somerton Road … and residents have expressed concern … what exactly is the government waiting for?” he said.

A state government spokesperson said upgrades around the Somerton and Roxburgh Park areas are being delivered to support Melbourne’s growing north.

“We’re also continuing to work with various stakeholders such as Hume council to progress planning investigations and manage this expected growth,” the spokesperson said.

The government highlights its upgrades to Mickleham Road as well as the Craigieburn Road West upgrade.

“There is ongoing extensive planning and development work to help inform any future projects,” the spokesperson said.

Mr Mulholland said the state government has rightly identified the growth in Melbourne’s north, but should deliver on the plans made three years ago.

Mr Mulholland said residents are fed up with being stuck in traffic for hours,

“[They are] forced to navigate an intersection that places them at an unacceptable risk of being involved in an accident,” he said.

“Accidents along Somerton Road are becoming more frequent, near misses are becoming far too common.”
