Truck rollover on Western Ring Road

Tullamarine and Gladstone Park residents have been advised to stay indoors after a truck crashed on the Western Ring Road, spilling chemical pesticide on to the road.

Emergency services were called to reports a truck had crashed into a safety barrier on the Melrose Drive off-ramp and rolled onto its side and into an embankment about 2am.

The driver, a 41-year-old Mernda man, was extricated by rescue crews and taken to hospital for observation.

Firefighters are working to clean up the scene as a significant amount of chemicals were spilled in the crash.

Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) assistant chief fire officer Craig Brownlie told 3AW the spillage would “take most of the day to resolve.”

The Melrose ramp has been blocked off to all traffic until the spillage has been cleared.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be determined and investigations remain ongoing.

FRV issued an hazard chemicals alert for surrounding suburbs this morning, warning nearby residents that hazardous fumes are being released in the area.

“There is currently no threat to the community, but you should continue to stay informed and monitor conditions,” the alert said.

Anyone who witnessed the crash, has dashcam footage or any other information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
